21st Century Grant Programs

 

Overview The 21t Century Program at Eagleton Elementary has the following after school programs. Fit and Fun, Girls Incorporated, Boy Scouts, Art Class, Homework help, Intensive Reading Tutoring Program, ESL for parents, Parent Workshops, Intersession and Last, but not least, Childcare for parent classes and workshops.

Fit and Fun This program runs five days a week from 3:00-6:00 p.m. There are 50 students registered from kindergarten to fifth grade. In this program, students have every day homework help, math, a physical activity and once a week they have nutrition and Kidz Lit.

Girls Incorporated This program is once a week for girls from 2nd and 3rd grade. We have two rotations. First rotation is for students who are not in the Fit and Fun program. The second rotation last 45 minutes and is for Fit and Fun students.

Boy Scouts This program is similar to the Girls Inc. It is offered once a week to boys from kndergarten to fifth grade. We also have two rotations. The first one is for students not in Fit and Fun and last, 1 hour including the 15 minute snack time. The second rotation is for the fit and fun students.

Art Class This class is sponsored by the Art Reach organization. 21st Century has been coordinating, evaluating and keeping attendance for these classes. The art class meets once a week for 1 1/2 hours and it has been offered to students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade classes. During the school year, we have three sessions of seven weeks each.

Homework Help This help is provided for Fit and Fun students who are attending1st to 5th grades. This program is offered Monday through Friday from 3:15-5:15 p.m.

Intensive Reading Tutoring Recently, we started this program. Groups of 5 or 6 studetns who are below their reading level are being tutored. The purpose is to help these students to develop the skills they need to become proficient readers.

Adult ESL Eagleton Elementary School offers classes for adults in partnership with Spring Institute for Intercultural Learning and DPS Extended Learning & Community Schools. Classes meet Monday & Wednesday mornings from 8:25-10:55 a.m. and childcare is available for ages 3-5. This is a mixed-level class and topics include housing, transportation, health, community services, consumer economics, employment, and civic participation. Lessons include listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Registration and placement takes place on the first day of class. In addition, new students may join the class during the first two weeks. After that, they must wait until the next session to register. Classes meet year-round with seasonal breaks.

Fall I Session 2006: July 31-October 11
Fall II Session 2006: October 30-December 13
Winter III Session 2007: January 17-March 14
Spring IV Session 2007: April 11-June 4

Parent Workshops Patsy Roybal from the Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition has been teaching the following workshops. 1. Partnering with our Parents to Ensure the Academic Success of our Students. 2. Getting our Kids into the Homework Habit. 3. Effective Parent/Teacher Communication. 4. The DPS Literacy Program.

Intersession This program is designed for students who need to improve their reading level. We have two intersessions in which we collaborate with Fit and Fun and the Boy Scouts. The Fall Intersession is held four hours a day for two weeks. The Spring Intersession is also held for two weeks for eight hours from 8:00-3:00.

Eagleton Elementary also serves 50 additional students in after school programs which do not belong to the 21st Century Grant.
