The bilingual program at Eagleton Elementary is aligned with the Denver Public Schools ELA (English Language Acquisition) Department's philosophy. The goal for Eagleton bilingual students is to make a positive transition into all-English instruction. This begins with teaching bilingual (Spanish-speaking) students in their primary language, they also benefit from daily sheltered English lessons and ESL instruction. The bilingual students are gradually transitioned into English instruction based on individual progress and specific needs. The evaluation critera for the transition of these students include: the LAS oral English proficiency test, and other informal assessments.
To assist in bilingual instruction, many teachers collaborate with their grade level colleagues to utilize creative methods of grouping students for various subject areas. The bilingual classrooms also benifit from the assistance of bilingual paraprofessionals. Bilingual material and resources are available in the classrooms, the library, the resource room, and the computer lab.
To meet the large number of bilingual students' needs at Eagleton Elementary, the classrooms are designed as follows:
Community Resource Advocate
Nurse
Psychologist
Reading Assistants
Speech and Language Pathologist
Social Worker
