The mission of Physical Education at Eagleton Elementary is to teach the habit of fitness. Many students today follow a sedentary lifestyle. This can lead to a variety of health problems later in life, such as: diabetes, heart disease, and general obesity. Our goal at Eagleton is to teach each child, through the use of games, skills, dance, and other activities, the necessary skills to lead and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Goals for the primary grade (ECE-2) students are fitness skills, dance, and movement fundamentals. Intermediate students (grades 3-5) will continue their emphasis on fitness skills and dance, but will also learn a variety of team and individual sports, as well as ballroom dance. Intermediate students will also take part in our annual Jump-Rope-For-Heart fundraiser. Field Day, scheduled in May, is a day of physical activity and fun where many parents and visitors get to see the play and sportsmanship we encourage at Eagleton.

Fitness is also encouraged outside the school day through the use of our school intramural sports program. Open to grades 3, 4 and 5, kids take part in a variety of team sports, such as soccer and volleyball.

Library

The library at Eagleton has a collection of over 10,000 fiction and non-fiction titles to select from with a large selection of Spanish books included in this collection. The goal of the library is to support the DPS Literacy program and encourage students to be life long readers.

Included in the library is an Internet computer lab that can be used by individuals or by classrooms.  All computers have access to LION (Library Information on the Net), which is an online resource. Through LION a patron can search the card catalog for books or use a variety of online databases, which include encyclopedias, EBSCO, and ACLIN. Students can also use the computers to take quizzes after reading a book with the Accelerated Reader program.  Students in Kindergarten through fifth grades participate in the Library Media Technology program.  All students are given the opportunity to become effective users of tools, ideas, and information to meet the standards of Denver Public School, which prepares students to become competent and contributing citizens of the 21st century.

Eagleton participates in RIF the Reading is Fundamental program, which distributes three free books to each student K-5th grades throughout the year. The library is staffed by a certificated teacher-librarian and is open daily from 8:15-3:30.

Music and Drama

Music instruction includes working on matching pitches when singing, musical literacy, simple percussion instrument playing, movement to music and more. Second grade students study music on recorders. Eagleton also has an amazing keyboard lab in the music room. Students in grades 3-5 are able to practice on these instruments. The instructor also provides time for a group of 4th and 5th grade students to come for additional study on the keyboards on Mondays after school.

Students at Eagleton learn vocal music and instrumental music with opportunities to perform for their parents and classmates at different times of the year. An evening Winter Concert is scheduled in December with students in grades 1-5 performing. Full-day kindergarteners will also have a separate daytime performance. More concerts will also be scheduled in the Spring.

Various drama skills are taught in preparation for performing short drama scenes for classmates and parents. Students have experience in memorizing lines, creating simple scenery and costumes, and learning about plays and other dramatic texts.

Art

Although Art is considered an enjoyable subject, students work hard at creating art and also reading and writing about art. Art instruction includes teaching students elements of art (line, color, shape, texture, and space) in order to incorporate them into different projects using the principles of design (contrast, repetition, pattern, and size relationships). Students learn new drawing techniques and practice them every day.
Lessons begin with a historical reference that sometimes includes a famous artist or image found in our brand new art textbooks. Students create a practice drawing on sketchbook paper before they begin their final piece. Every student at Eagleton will complete a sketchbook that will be taken home at the end of the year. Student artwork is showcased in the front hallway. Please stop by and admire the beautiful artwork.

Educación Física

La missión del departamento de educación física en Eagleton es enseñar el hábito de salud.  Hoy día muchos de los estudiantes están viviendo vidas sedentarias, por eso, una meta de Eagleton es animar a los niños a participar en actividades físicas cada día. Utilizando juegos, conocimientos y baile, urgimos a que los estudiantes formen las destrezas físicas necesarias para hacer ejercicio para mantener una rutina saludable.

Estudiantes de los grados K-2 participan en conocimientos saludables, baile y actividades de movimientos fundamentales. Estudiantes de los grados 3-5 participan en actividades como los más jóvenes y además participan en deportes individuales y de equipo. El programa intramuro ocurre después de clases y es para estudiantes de 3, 4 y 5 grados, este consiste en los equipos de futból y vóibol.

Todos los alumnos de Eagleton participan en un día de juegos en el fin de mayo. Todo tipo de actividades deportivos se juegan con la idea de mantener la caballerosidad deportiva durante los juegos. Invitamos a los padres a venir a observar los juegos del día y como son los estudiantes de Eagleton.

La biblioteca

La bibioteca de Eagleton tiene una colección de más que 14,000 libros de ficción y no-ficción, con una colección grande de libros en español.  La meta de la biblioteca es  apoyar el programa de lectura de DPS y animar a los niños a ser lectores por toda la vida.

Incluido en la biblioteca es un grupo de computadoras que tienen servicio del internet que pueden ser usados por individuales o una clase.  Todas las computadoras tienen aceso a LION (información de la bibioteca del internet), que es un recurso del internet.  Usando LION una persona puede buscar libros o usar otras materias del internet, que incluye enciclopedias, EBSCO y ACLIN.  También los estudiantes pueden tomar pruebas en las computadoras después de leer un libro con el programa de Accelerated Reader.  Los niños en kinder hasta quinto grados participan en el programa de la bibioteca y technología.  Todos los niños tienen la oportunidad de ser usadores efectivos de herramientas, ideas e información para lograr los estandardes de DPS, que prepara a los niños a ser ciudanos que contribuen a la sociedad del siglo 21.

La escuela de Eagleton participa en el programa de RIF (lectura es fundamental), que distribuye 3 libros gratuaitos a los niños de kinder hasta 5o grados durante el año.  La bilioteca tiene una maestra certificada y está abierta diariamente de las 8:15 hasta las 3:30.

Música y drama

Instrucción de músic incluye trabajos de parear sonidos cuando canta, lectura de música, ritmos simples con instrumentos, movemiento con música y mucho más.  Los alumnos en segundo grado estudian música usando flautas pequeñas.  La escuela de Eagleton también tiene pianos electronicos en el salón de música.  Los estudiantes de tercer grado hasta quinto pueden practicar usando estos instrumentos.  Además, la maestra provee tiempo después de clases en lunes para niños de cuarto y quinto grado para estudiar más con los pianos electronicos. 

Los estudiantes en Ealgeton aprenden música vocal e instrumental con oportunidades de compartir con sus padres y compañeros en diferentes tiempos del año.  Una noche en diciembre, los niños del primer hasta quinto grados tendrán un concierto de música.  Los niños de kinder tendrán un concierto durante el día.  Más concierto serán ofrecidos en la primavera.

Varias destrezas de drama están enseñadas en preparación para actuar en esenarios cortos de drama para sus padres y compañeros.  Los estudiantes tienen expereincia en memorizar líneas de obras de teatro, crear escenarios y disfraces simples y aprender sobre obras de teatro u otros textos dramaticos. 

Arte

Para poder leer, escribir y crear arte, lecciones en la clase de arte comienzan con una referencia histórica que, a veces, incluye un artista o una imagen famosa. Los estudiantes aprenden los elementos de arte (línea, color, forma, textura y espacio) y los principios de diseño (contraste, repetición, patrón y tamaño) para crear diferentes proyectos artísticos. Mucha práctica con el uso de materiales de arte al fin resulta en proyectos finales que se pueden ver en la vitrina del pasillo de la escuela. Le invitamos a ver los proyectos en el pasillo.
